Aruba is an independent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Aruba’s political system takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democracy, whereby the prime minister is the head of government. Federal legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. Defence, foreign affairs, and the Supreme Court are handled by the Kingdom. Elections for the parliament are once every four years.
